Many a Summer’s day have we spent eating ice lollypops to cool down. Childhood memories of soft, cold ice creams shaped into our favourite cartoon characters… but take another look, fine art photographer Michael Massaias offers us a different perspective to these sweet treats in his Transmogrify series.
Michael photographed these melting ice lollies on a long exposure, revealing a surreal and mesmerising feel to the final images. The hard candy eyes of the characters add a sinister tone to what is normally seen as innocent. The melting ice creates vibrant and colourful patterns which are works of art on their own. Michael deliberately leaves the wooden stick in the photo to offer both perspective and to remind us of the lolly’s former life.
