Birds of a Feather

Aptly named Artist Chris Maynard, creates beautiful sculptures of birds from feathers using just a scalpel.

Located in Washington, Maynard uses lost feathers to carve artworks showing birds flying together in formations and other birdy activities. He uses beautiful, and often unusual and colourful feathers, to cut out his artworks, with the feathers usually sourced from zoos and aviaries. Working with shed feathers, it’s entirely possible that the birds the feathers came from are still alive, and the artworks make you imagine their adventures in flight.

Whether the sculptures show an early bird grabbing a worm, or the flock migrating for the winter, this pretty feathers art enhances the magic of the natural world.

“Each feather, though dead and discarded, keeps something of the bird’s essence”, he told ‘This Is Colossal’.

Including feathers from a variety of birds including peacocks and macaws, these graceful handcrafted sculptures give new meaning to the phrase ‘birds of a feather’.
